    Burnt City Spruce Moose

    Burnt City Spruce Moose

    German-Style Pilsener with Spruce Tips
    5.1% ABV

Clear golden body with a quickly diminishing white head. Really nice pine on the nose, but not in the hopped up pine kind of way. Fresher, and closer to the forest. Also some crackery malt coming through as well. Really a pretty drinkable beer with a mild sweetness as soon as it hits the tongue followed by a nice piney bitterness as it goes down, finishing dry and clean. This is a nice idea and hitting the spot for me.

Nice chaulky orange color with a stark-white, quickly diminishing head. Though, there is some lovely lacing as you make your way through the glass. Really nice pine, pineapple juice, and a bit of mango. Orange juice, too. Really quite dank, actually. Surprisingly. Easy drinking and smooth. Not too sweet, nor too bitter. Though the bitterness picks up as warms. All in all, pretty well balanced and definitely enjoyable. Good stuff.

Billed as a Farmhouse Ale brewed with Prickly Pear. Sounds good. Bright orange/pink with a fizzy, persistent white head. The aroma is a nice balance of the sweet fruit and the tart esters of the yeast. Really lively carbonation and bright on the tongue. Starts slightly sweet, then finishes pretty dry. Not tart, but trending that way. This probably won’t be a regular, but it’s delightful and enjoyable.

This beer definitely works for me. I’ve purchased a few 4-packs in the past, so I’m glad to see it again here. Slightly hazy straw color with a nice white head. The aroma has a solid crackery base with punchy, grassy hops wafting above. Immensely drinkable and satisfying. A light malt sweetness followed by that crisp bitterness at the end. I could drink this all night.

Translucent gold with a foamy, persistent beige head. The aroma is resinous and sweet. Citrus and pine abound, but it also seems like it’s getting a tad long in the tooth. Maybe it’s changing tastes, or some misperception, but I’m finding aromas and flavors I associated with long-lived IPA. Even if I’m wrong, those aromas and flavors don’t impart the best experience. For me, that is. I suppose it’s a take on a traditional American IPA with the acknowledgement of NEIPA style, but it’s not my favorite.

    Casa Humilde Alba

    Casa Humilde Alba

    Vienna-Style Lager
    5.1% ABV

A nice, easy-going lager. It looks great, with that lovely copper color. There’s a delightful subtle malt sweetness on the nose that’s almost nutty. There’s maybe some whole-grain bread in there as well. It’s easy drinking, starting ever so slightly sweet, but with a crisp, mild bitterness right at the end. This is nice.

Clear, light brown body beneath a frothy off-white head. Surprisingly light in color to my eye, but that’s ok. Fairly sweet, but clean, aroma of caramel, latte, brown sugar, and some booze. The body, like the color, is a little light, but it’s easy drinking for the weight. It’s not the greatest example of the style, and it defied my expectations a bit, but I’ve grown to enjoy it over a few cans. The sweetness prevents any real roast flavor from the coffee to shine, but it’s clearly got coffee. It’s not a balanced beer, but it’s that’s ok. It’s still tasty. The alcohol and sweetness battle it out. I would love to try a version with more coffee added, to see what happens.

    Burnt City Juice Pillow

    Burnt City Juice Pillow

Juicy or Hazy India Pale Ale
    7.4% ABV

This is an excellent hazy offering from Burnt City. It’s got a little more bite than some of the others. The body is soft and velvety on the tongue. The aroma is chuck-full of fresh fruit, with loads of pineapple, fresh orange juice, apricot, and maybe a hint of lemon. It starts sweet on the tongue, but transitions to a nice, pithy bitterness at the end. There is a real pineapple-orange juice quality to this beer that is really working for me right now. I happened to stumble across a 4-pack of this just before picking up the advent calendar and had been holding on to a can, just in case it wasn’t included. I’m not at all upset to have done that. The beer is still great and I’ve got another can in fridge.

Bold Dog Tilly (Mango and Papaya Hefeweizen)

    Fruited Wheat Beer

Hefeweizens can be enjoyable, but it’s a style I typically avoid. It’s especially true as an at-home beer. I was interested to see the mango and papaya on here, as I thought those flavors could add an interesting twist to the style. But alas, it’s done little for me here. The wheat flavors are strong here, and there are fruity esters coming from the yeast, but the clove and banana are fairly subdued. Surprisingly, I get little to no mango or papaya either. It’s a little more tart, and the aromas are a bit more bright and tropical that a typical hefe, but I’m not sure I would have picked out mango or papaya. As it warms, I’m getting more papaya in the nose. It’s not a bad beer, but it is one not geared for me. And that’s a-ok.

    American-Style Sour Ale

Nice mild sour here. There’s a good tartness going on, plus a lovely plum aroma. Quite nice. Finishes rather dry, with a nice smack of the mouth. Refreshing and enjoyable, this wouldn’t be a regular beverage for me, but nice every now and again.
